🌍 Unlocking Climate Finance for Sustainable Livestock Development 🐄 We're pleased to announce the release of three evidence briefs on climate finance for sustainable livestock development. These briefs are the result of collaborative efforts by our Livestock Data for Decisions (LD4D) Climate Finance Solutions Group, bringing together 20 international experts from various institutions. 🔑 Key objectives: • Bridge the gap between available climate finance and climate action in the livestock sector in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) • Provide decision-makers with tools and insights to quantify emissions and build compelling investment cases • Support the transition to more sustainable and inclusive livestock systems 📊 Our evidence briefs: 1.       The Climate Investment Case for the Livestock Sector 2.       Policy Levers to Unlock Climate Finance in the Livestock Sector 3.       Estimating Livestock Emissions to Unlock Climate Financing 💡 Why this matters: • Over 1.3 billion people rely on livestock for food security • The sector contributes up to 20% of human-induced GHG emissions • Currently, the livestock sector in LMICs receives only a fraction of available climate finance • With global food demand projected to increase by 30-100% by 2050, sustainable solutions are crucial 🌟 Impact highlights: • Sustainable practices like rotational grazing can reduce GHG emissions by up to 30% while boosting productivity • Kenya mobilized $144 million through its Dairy Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) by including livestock in national climate plans • Standardized methods for measuring livestock emissions are key to accessing climate finance 👏 Acknowledging Our Experts: We extend our gratitude to the fantastic group who worked together to write these briefs, including: Sintayehu Alemayehu, Rebecca Chamberlin, Laura Cramer, Carlos Gonzalez Fischer, Bernard Kimoro, Gregory Kohler, Ricardo González-Quintero, Jeannette Gurung, Danielle Niedermaier, An Notenbaert, Kurt Rockeman, Gareth Salmon, Dominik Wisser, Nick Wheelhouse, Andreas Wilkes, Michael Victor, Frances Ryan, michael macleod and Andrew Bisson. Currently only 5% of employees in developing regions receive training in green skills compared to over 28% in developed regions. These regions face a pressing need to diversify labor force skills in order to meet the needs of the 21st century economy, as a large portion of workers are currently employed in low-skill agricultural labor. To achieve a smart and sustainable future with good jobs and better livelihoods, more efforts are needed to build a workforce with the green and digital skills required to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global economy." This will be done through constructive conversations between experienced BPOC landworkers and financial providers where all voices will be actively heard. New report on emerging forest finance mechanisms 🌳 The Forest Declaration Assessment is excited to share its latest report which dives into the landscape of innovative finance instruments designed to advance global forest objectives. It explores emerging tools that blend funding sources, reduce investor risks, and enhance access for Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IP & LC). Here’s what you should know: ➡️ Forests are crucial to Earth's ecosystems and economic health but remain underfunded in climate mitigation efforts. ➡️ There's an urgent need to shift finance away from harmful activities and increase funding for forest-positive initiatives. ➡️ Public funds alone can't close the investment gap in nature and forests—private sector engagement is essential. ➡️ From bonds and IP & LC funds to national forest funds and debt reduction instruments, each finance mechanism has its own pros and cons. However, when combined, they can help bridge the growing forest finance gap. 🌍 Food Systems at the Heart of Climate Action 🌾 Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir CMG was interviewed for this article by Mark Hillsdon from Reuters. The piece highlights the critical funding gaps faced by small-scale farmers—producers of much of the world’s food—who receive less than 14% of global climate finance, with just 3% of public finance dedicated to transforming food systems, despite their significant contribution to global greenhouse emissions. Gonzalo emphasized the urgency of incentivizing regenerative agriculture and tackling pressing issues like food waste, deforestation, and sustainable agriculture. 📢 “COP30 is the moment to accelerate this transition and ensure farmers are supported with the right incentives to adopt regenerative practices,” Gonzalo said. He also stressed the importance of localized approaches to integrate food and agriculture into national climate plans (NDCs), acknowledging the complexity and diversity of food systems worldwide. Road to #COP29: Family Farmers’ Organizations to Define Future of #ClimateFinancing As we were recently reminded in the #SOFI2024 report, the state of food security and #nutrition is such that one in 11 people globally and one in five in Africa face hunger as of 2023. Time seems to stand still as current levels of undernourishment compare to those in 2008-2009. As the heat turns up on an unparalleled environmental and food crisis, family farming empowerment is critical to stabilize the climate and undo global hunger levels that have plateaued for three years in a row. 🙌 The European Investment Bank (EIB) and WWF join forces to boost climate adaptation in Europe 🙌 This is fantastic news. With Europe facing increasingly intense floods and droughts, the EIB is teaming up with WWF to accelerate climate adaptation in Europe by mobilising early-stage funding for nature-based solutions (NbS) to help buffer societies and economies against the worsening impacts of the climate and biodiversity crises. And we aiming high.
